Position Description

Position Title: Bookstore Clerk
Department: Bookstore
Reports to: Bookstore Director and Bookstore Assistant Director

The mission of the Bookstore is to provide a convenient and efficient source for textbooks, school supplies, official school merchandise, and biblical resources for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and area churches. Institutional Goals supported by Department: IG 2, 4, 5

A. Summary: 
The Bookstore clerk is the foremost contact with all customers, both internal and external individuals. This role is responsible for greeting customers, helping them find items for purchase, and ensuring the experience is pleasant and helpful to them. This role is also key to keeping the store in an organized fashion and, at times, light cleaning is needed.

B. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: 

1. Greet customers as they enter 

2. Assist customers with locating and selecting the product that best fits their needs

3. Receive customer requests for items not presently in stock and facilitate ordering their item 

4. Accurately perform cashiering duties including but not limited to operating the point of sale system on the computer, handling cash, processing credit card purchases, and inputting house charges

5. Place new items in their respective area of the store and restock the general merchandise as received

6. Keep clothing items folded and stocked for display with a professional appearance

7. Assist the other clerks to keep the shelves dusted and books in the proper order

8. Assist the Bookstore Director to remove old products from the shelves so they can be returned to the supplier or marked down for clearance

9. Work special on-campus events as needed 

10. Assist in creating and setting up displays

C. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

1. Ability and desire to give attention to details

2. Must have the ability and genuine desire to create a welcoming environment for all individuals

3. Must have computer skills and the ability to learn the point of sale system utilized by the college

4. Must be able to competently handle money and be comfortable counting back change to cash-paying customers

5. Strong verbal and written communication skills that promote a service-minded attitude for all whom this role interacts with

6. Must prioritize having a professional appearance to represent the college and department well

7. Strong work ethic and a desire to serve the college

E. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: 

1. High school diploma or equivalent

2. Two years previous experience handling cash with a positive record with cash balancing

3. Two years previous customer service experience

4. Previous experience working with merchandise is preferred

F. Work Environment and Physical Requirements: 

The work environment will be primarily indoors in a climate-controlled environment. This role will require the ability to stand for extended periods of time. The role will require bending, stooping, and reaching to access shelved items. One might also occasionally use a small ladder and will need to prioritize safety. This position, on occasion, may need to be able to safely lift up to 20 pounds. Accommodations could be made.
