Job Summary

Northwest Hills Christian Church (NWHCC) is located on the west side of San Antonio, Texas, the seventh most populous city in the United States and second only to Houston as the most populous city in Texas. San Antonio has a population of approximately 1.47 million with projections of an additional million residents by 2025. The NWHCC congregation has between 350 and 450 members. Ethnically, about 1/3 of the congregation is Hispanic; 1/3 is Anglo; and the remaining 1/3 are African-American or Asian. In age, we range from babes in arms to elderly saints in their 90s. A significant proportion of our congregation are 20-somethings and 30-somethings. This is a well-educated and sophisticated urban congregation. Many of our members come to us from Roman Catholic backgrounds as well as a range of Protestant denominations. While fluency in Spanish for our prospective pastor would be a definite benefit, it is by no means a prerequisite for our consideration. We have a robust and very talented English-to-Spanish translation ministry that augments our worship services. We are looking for a candidate who is comfortable in a fast-paced urban environment and who enjoys the challenges of ministering in a religiously and ethnically diverse congregation.

Applicant Requirements

Regarding prospective candidates for the position of Senior Minister at NWHCC beginning in September 2017, we are looking for the following general qualifications: Education: A Master of Divinity degree would be considered the minimum acceptable level of education. A D.Min or PhD would be preferable given the education standards of the congregation as well as what they have come to expect in terms of the quality of Sunday sermons and the weekly teaching ministries of the church. Experience: We have not set a minimum number of years with “pulpit experience” that prospective candidates must have other than to say we will be looking for someone with a mature and well-formed sense of ministry who has a love for ethnic diversity within the body of Christ. The experience earned by prospective candidates can take any of a variety of forms from the conventional settled ministry of an established congregation to years spent on the foreign mission field to a career as a military chaplain. Enthusiasm: Perhaps an odd-sounding qualification but a quality of personality needed in our prospective future pastor to match the energy generated by the many dynamic members of this congregation. NWHCC is not the sort of congregation for someone who wants to ride off into the sunset of a blissful retirement. Our church facilities are located in a fast-growing section of San Antonio with both new light commercial enterprises as well as many new sub-divisions and apartment complexes springing up all around us. The demographics of the west side of San Antonio are rapidly evolving and we will need a future pastor with the pulpit skills and leadership vision to meet these new challenges.
