Position Description

Position Title: Access Services Librarian
Department: Seth Wilson Library
Reports to: Director of the Seth Wilson Library

The mission of the Seth Wilson Library is to provide quality resources and services to facilitate lifelong learning and research for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the wider community. Institutional Goals supported by Department: IG 2, 3, 4

*This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) and will be required to participate in CSA training, and is required to immediately forward all reports of Clery Act crimes brought to their attention to the Clery Compliance Officer.

A. Summary

The Access Services Librarian oversees circulation, as well as residential reference services and student engagement in the Seth Wilson Library. This position serves in the library to provide the best possible resource and research experience with a patron-centric model of library services for the Ozark Christian College community.

B. Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Circulation Services (50%)

· Serves as Circulation Supervisor
· Leads the process of hiring, scheduling, training, and evaluating library clerks
· Double-checks and approves timecards for library clerks
· Resolves all problems involving scheduling and coverage of the circulation desk and keeps the Library Director informed of any issues
· Develops training material for library clerk professional development
· Oversees library clerk task management
· Serves as the direct point of contact for library clerks during the library’s open hours with exceptions for STAT or vacation days
· Leads library in hospitality

Access Services (25%)

· Leads residential reference services and interacts with other relevant college departments regarding library services, policies, and employment
· Oversees Course Reserves and Inter-Library Loan services
· Liaises with relevant external associations, consortial memberships, and vendors for library services as needed
· Develops residential student engagement projects, such as displays, seasonal decoration, and library programming
· Leads a friendly patron-centric culture best suited for instruction and research

Other (25%)

· Oversees the cataloging and processing of all items added to the collection
· Assists in running reports, data collection, and data analysis
· Engages in professional development through further self-study and participation in professional associations
· Other job duties as assigned by the Library Director

· Excellent customer service skills to be modeled for student library clerks
· Healthy evaluative skills to identify areas for improvement and the acute initiative to address them
· Positive, innovative, and solution-focused attitude when approaching problems
· Proficient with computers and electronic access technologies, specifically knowledge of library systems and procedures
· Ability to connect library work to ministry service and express that to student clerks, faculty, staff, and community patrons


· The Access Services Librarian is the ordinary and direct supervisor of eight to fifteen student library clerks.
· This position should be available to library clerks during all of the library’s operating hours for questions, concerns, or unforeseen needs if a non-student library staff member is not present or cannot assist. The exceptions to this availability are emergencies, STAT days, or vacation days.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

· Bachelor’s degree in Library Science required; master’s degree in Library Science preferred
· Familiarity with integrated library management systems, ILL (Inter-Library Loan) functions, basic copyright law, and policies and procedures related to access services
· Prior experience working in a library setting
· Prior experience in a supervisory and/or training role

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

· This position primarily functions indoors.
· The ability to climb stairs, push carts of materials, and reach the top and bottom shelves of book stacks to place library resources is required.
· Occasionally lift boxes weighing up to fifty pounds; modification may be available.
· Visual acuity and accuracy are necessary to manage details and numbers.
· In addition to meetings in various campus buildings, there is an expectation to attend weekly chapel services and faculty/staff lunch, and the opportunity to lead a student mentor group—all of which require the ability to traverse the college campus.
