We are firmly committed to the importance of mentoring for individual spiritual formation. This is why most students are required to complete an Academic Mentored Internship or a Directed Field Experience before graduating. Internships give the experienced student a chance to observe many aspects of ministry while serving in a specialized area.
An internship goes beyond the classroom setting. It fills in the gaps of ministry preparation that cannot be taught in the lecture hall or from a course textbook. The lessons learned in class gain a ministry context that helps the student to see their value.
The student who successfully completes their internship should achieve these results:
- Learn what it means to contribute positively to the church.
- Test classroom experience with the reality of a ministry setting.
- Be better prepared to deal with the day-to-day aspects of the located ministry setting.
- Reflect upon personal pastoral growth and self-understanding and the basic nature of people.
- Draw upon wisdom for the Christian life as modeled by a mentor.
- Discern and validate the calling to vocational ministry.
