KOBC 90.7 FM
is a 60,000 watt Non-Commercial, Non-Profit, Educational station dedicated
to providing the best possible ministry through Christian Music and Programming
directed at a target age range of 25 to 45 years. KOBC's signal coverage is
approximately 65 miles. A translator is located in Chanute, Kansas, on a frequency
of 103.1 FM. As well as ministering to the listening area, KOBC offers training
and employment opportunities for OCC students.
Non-Commercial Radio Stations are stations set aside
by the FCC is a special broadcast band, 87.9 - 91.9
MHz, operating on a non-profit basis. KOBC and other
stations of the same type of license are designated
to be primarily concerned with meeting the public need
and not in making money. Because of this design, we
are not allowed to sell commercials and are totally
dependent on the donations of individuals, churches
and businesses who believe in the ministry of KOBC.
Financial needs are met by donations from listeners
and businesses through our Sharathon program and through
our Underwriting program.

Sharathon
is the annual operational fund raising event for KOBC
to bring it's budgetary needs to our listeners. This
event is similar to a telethon and is usually held for
three days the second or third week in November. The
first day is devoted to praise and prayer where listeners
call in and share how God has been faithful in their
lives. During the fundraising portion, listeners call
in to make faith promises to support the ministry for
the coming year. We use these faith promises as a guide
for setting a budget, trusting that the Lord will provide
for our needs through our listeners. Faith promises
can be fulfilled immediately or throughout the year.
All
money sent to KOBC is spent for the ministry and is
applied directly to meeting the operating budget unless
designated to specific needs. As the budget is met,
excess funds will be put towards station improvement
and growth. All money sent to the station is entered
in our books, then sent to the OZARK CHRISTIAN COLLEGE
Development office for application to the station's
budget.
(Since
all our donations go through OCC books, donors will
be automatically entered on the school's mailing list
unless specifically directed otherwise.)

Friendraiser
is an annual event devoted to a time to specifically
target in on welcoming new listeners to the KOBC family.
It is set up similar to Sharathon with a day of praise
and prayer with the funds raised in the following days
designated towards specific station needs and capital
improvements that are difficult to accomplish within
the annual operations budget.
Underwriting
Underwriting
sponsorship is funding of a specific hour on an on-going
basis. KOBC's underwriting sponsorships are usually
maintained by, but not limited to area businesses and
churches. Underwriting announcements are produced for
those choosing this method of supporting the financial
needs of KOBC.
History of KOBC
In
May of 1966 KGNT-AM went on the air from the Chapel
on the campus of Ozark Bible College (now OZARK CHRISTIAN COLLEGE). The 3 watt station was started for training
purposes and could only be picked up within a 100 foot
radius from any building on campus.
On
February 24th, 1967 an application to the FCC was accepted
for a construction permit for a 10-watt non-commercial,
educational FM station. By the next fall, KOBC was on
the air operating at the frequency of 91.1 FM.
The
support of KOBC continued to grow over the years and
in 1972 approval was received from the FCC to increase
power to 30,000 watts, raise the tower height to 250
feet, and change the frequency to 90.7 FM.
Because
of the need for more room and equipment space, KOBC's
operations were moved from the chapel to the basement
of the Missions Building. The facilities consisted of
a transmitter room, FM studio, production studio, guest
studio, news area, and three small areas used as office
space.
In
December 1987, a translator was added in Chanute, Kansas
at 103.1 FM. The following July a translator in Fayetteville,
Arkansas was added at a frequency of 100.1 FM. Following
the start up of a Christian radio station in the Fayetteville
area, the Arkansas translator was dropped in 1996. The
Chanute translator remains in operation today.
In
1996 all KOBC-FM studios and offices were moved the
current facility located at 2711 Peace Church Avenue
in Joplin. This gave the radio department much needed
space as well as opening up classroom and office space
for OZARK CHRISTIAN COLLEGE.
On
November 10th, 1998, KOBC was granted a license to operate
at 60,000 watts at a tower height of 500 feet which
increased our coverage area by about 40%.
The
ministry of KOBC continues to reach into the 4-State
area with the message of Jesus. On October 17th, 1999,
KOBC 90.7 FM completed 25 years ministry to the 4-State
community.
