What is TLC?
The Learning Center, located in L-12 of the Library, is a resource facility
available to the OCC family. Its purpose is to provide resources for intellectual
development.
The Goals of TLC
- To provide programs of learning assistance for students experiencing academic
difficulty.
- To provide learning resources for the entire student body.
- To challenge successful students to excel in advanced self-directed studies.
- To provide academic support services to the faculty.
A special one hour course, called "Study Skills" (PI 112), will be provided
for new students who need assistance in developing their study skills and
for students on academic probation.
It will involve an initial interview with the TLC Director in which the student's
learning needs will be assessed. Students will then be assisted in developing
an individualized study program to build their learning skills. Students in
Study Skills will write their own learning contracts and meet regularly with
the Director to assess progress and future needs.
Returning students who are on academic probation will be enrolled in Study
Skills. All new students who meet at least two of the following conditions
will be enrolled in this class:
- ACT (enhanced) of 17 or below.
- High School or College (for transfers) GPA of less than 2.50.
- Score in the lowest 20% on the OCC English Exam.

Development of TLC
The Learning Center was developed in the summer of 1990 as a response to the
growing need of our students to receive academic assistance outside of the
classroom.
The faculty and trustees of the College are committed to the mission of OCC:
To prepare men and women for Christian Service. We believe that an essential
ingredient of this preparation for the 90's will be TLC.
This sizable investment of resources, facilities and time, on the part of
the College's administration, makes a clear statement about our purpose, our
product and our priority - YOU, THE STUDENT.
Philosophy of TLC
- The best workers in the church are not necessarily those with the highest
IQ. By helping struggling students succeed, we may be placing some of our
most productive, caring, and innovative servants into the church of tomorrow.
- There are a number of reasons, other than IQ, why students experience
academic difficulty. One of the main reasons is lack of adequate academic
training. TLC will provide much of that necessary training.
- OCC is committed to helping students succeed in their college experience.
TLC will help students gain confidence in themselves and mastery of their
studies. This success will breed further expectations of excellence.
